Cue title charge as Higgo fights back from Covid

-

John Higgins is raring to defend his crown at the Players Championship after recovering from a second bout of Covid.

The world No.6 heads to Wolverhampton’s Aldersley Leisure Village among the favourites to walk away with the £125,000 top prize.

The Scot said: “I played the Masters and then I had Covid. It was nigh on exactly a year to the day since I had it the first time because I had to pull out last year’s German Masters because of it.

“I had it with my wife. I wasn’t great for a few days.

“I’m all fine now but I had a couple of days in my bed with flu symptoms.

“I played a hell of a lot heading into Christmas so it was nice to put the cue away for a bit. I feel refreshed for the rest of the season now.”

He’s lost four finals this season but added: “I don’t care what anyone says, I feel like a better player than I’ve ever been now.”

Justin Langer has quit as coach of the Aussie men’s cricket team. Cricket Australia said he was offered

a short-term extension to his contract “which sadly he has opted not to accept”. Luke Humphries won his first senior ranking title as the Newbury darts player beat Ryan Searle 8- 4 in the Players Championship 1 Final in Barnsley. Glasgow captain Jonny Bunyan has backed American recruit Vance Johnson to boost the club’s push for silverware.

Rocks visit Cheshire today in the British Basketball League in what doubles up as a dress rehearsal for their Trophy semi-final.

Bunyan said: “I definitely believe he’s got the pedigree to come good and you can’t judge him off the first couple of games.”
