Hoops still Bit special

- Scott McDermott

Nir Bitton has racked up 17 trophies in nine seasons at Celtic but insists he will never take life at Parkhead for granted.

The Israeli will play his 35th match of the season tomorrow at Tannadice if he’s picked against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup.

At the start of this campaign, many felt he’d be phased out by new gaffer Ange Postecoglou.

But midfielder Bitton always kept the belief that he could play a key role for the Aussie.

He said: “I was a bit unlucky with injuries in the last few years but I know my ability.

“I always trust in myself and it’s then up to the boss to give me his faith.

“Every day I try to do my best to show that I deserve to play. I’ve played a lot of g games this season and I a appreciate it.

“I don’t take it for g granted, playing for this m massive club. It’s a big

kept his belief achievement a for me. I’m part p of a good team and I just j want that to continue.

“After nine years at this club, I know it’s always about winning.

“There is no time to settle or to take your time.

“As soon as you sign for this club, there’s a big expectation on you.

“After the gaffer signed, we knew it would be a tough start because a lot of new players came in.

“But we’ve improved a lot in that time. We’re in a good place now.”

Bitton, 30, is certainly appreciated by his gaffer who has used him in many different positions.

Postecoglou said: “Niro has been very good, he was one of the few experienced ones we had left.

“The way we play suits him in midfield. He has a physical presence but he’s also a smart performer who reads the game well.

“It’s been great to be able to call on him particularly for that No.6 role.”
