Position is the place to be in Carlisle battle

- Punter Joe

Powerful Position ( 4.43) can land another big pot for Welsh Wizard Christian Williams.

The Glamorgan genius is heading up the road for the final day of the Go North Racing Series at Carlisle.

After two days in Scotland, it’s to Cumbria for the finale and Williams, who is planning a big raid on Scotland for Saturday’s Grand National at Ayr with Kitty’s Light and Win My Wings, has a strong chance in the

Red Rum Series Final.

The seven-year-old is on a spring roll having landed a hat-trick during Cheltenham Festival week away from the spotlight at Sedgefield.

Most racing fans might have missed it but Powerful Position danced up and the handicapper didn’t fail to spot it.

Williams’ charge has been hiked up another 10 pounds but the truth of the matter is he might still be ahead of the assessor given his trainer’s shrewd nature.

Powerful Position will be getting a stone from top-weight Magna Sam and, although there are some dangerous lurkers off the minimum, confidence remains behind the traveller from The Valleys. WELL ABOVE PAR

(3.36) is well worth another shot in the Monet’s Garden Series Final Handicap Chase.

Lucinda Russell’s yak won this event a year ago beating Ard Chaos narrowly and the pair go head-to-head again.

Ard Chaos could easily be favourite having run well recently but Well Above Par was a winner again at Carlisle last November before the ground began to turn soft and the better conditions might just be the deciding factor here.

Well Above Par is, of course, open to being outrun by younger legs, but Stephen Mulqueen will put the 10-year-old in the right places and have a real squeak.

Ascot also stages jumping in the UK with small fields the order of the day in Berkshire.

THYME WHITE (2.10) might be a short price but he really should be winning the handicap chase for Paul Nicholls.

The champion trainer kept a lot of his decent horses away from Cheltenham to concentrate on the likes of Ayr and Aintree.

Thyme White struck as the type to come out at those meetings, so the fact he’s been pitched into today’s event says plenty.

The six-year-old was a facile winner when last sighted at Doncaster and, with the quicker ground now back to aid his chances, he’s fancied to win well.

It’s Flat racing at Doncaster today and a bit too early to be trying to gauge form. If you need to have a bet, DIAVOLO (2.00) has an interesting profile for the Charlie Fellows yard.

The four-year-old was turned over at odds-on on the Tapeta at Newcastle last time but Jamie Spencer is a fascinating jockey booking back on grass.

There are also two meetings in Ireland with the master Willie Mullins set to have a good day jumping with strong chances at Limerick. Mercurey is an exciting bumper horse for Rich Ricci but too short for us working men to back.

The Flat action is at Naas and top-rated PATRICK SARSFIELD (4.25) has a chance in Listed Devoy Stakes for Joseph O’Brien.
