Koepka sends Rahm spinning out in Texas

- ■ Bernie McGuire

Brooks Koepka won the battle of the giants as he sent Jon Rahm packing on the 19th in Texas.

The American won on the first extra hole in their WGCDell Technologies Match Play last-16 showdown after Rahm missed a chance from just inside nine feet to march on. Koepka dropped a birdie putt on the sudden death play-off hole – the par four 10th – as the Ryder Cup rivals stole the attention of the Austin Country Club crowd. Former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson proved too strong for Englishman Richard Bland, recording a 3&2 win in their last-16 clash.

However, the biggest result of the afternoon’s play went to Mexican Abraham Ancer who thumped world No. 2 Collin Morikawa 7&6.

On the DP World Tour, Ewen Ferguson will have to call on his links game if he’s to win the Qatar Masters in Doha.

The Scot produced a timely birdie on 16 in a round of 73 to drop to five under, albeit trails co-leaders, Pole Adrian Meronk and Englishman Matthew Jordan, by just three shots.

Ferguson, tied seventh, said: “It was a fight in the conditions all the way to the end, though I am a little disappointed not to birdie the last. I found it really diff icult around the greens given it was so windy.

“To finish close to par was a pretty decent effort given just how difficult the conditions were. At only three back, I have given myself a good chance.

“We’ve been told it’s going to be just as windy on Sunday but coming from Scotland we’re used to it. I don’t mind it.

“But I have to admit this was just a little bit too windy for me. We’ll keep trying.”
