We are Well in hunt too

- Scott Burns

Gutted Graham Alexander insists a European place is still there for the taking for his Motherwell side.

The Steelmen lost 1- 0 to fellow European chasers Dundee United, leaving them in sixth spot.

But with fifth bringing a European Conference League spot with it, the Fir Park boss refuses to give up hope.

Alexander, whose side faces fifth- placed Ross County next weekend, said: “I thought we had scored at the end. “It was a great ball for Jake (Carroll) but the keeper made a great save.

“I thought the players did all they could and that is all I can ask for. We were just unlucky.

“Each game is tough but we have to be consistent with our mindset and take what we did today into next week’s game. It is still there

for everyone – ourselves, Ross County and Dundee United.

“It is not guaranteed for anyone yet. There is still a great opportunity for us.”

Well hit the woodwork twice before United took the lead and then saw a late push come up short.

Alexander added: “I thought we deserved something from the game, without a shadow of a doubt.

“We were unfortunate to go a goal down from nothing but the focus and the discipline of the players was excellent.

“We didn’ t become disjointed and chase an equaliser too quickly. We were controlled and in the second half we had some great chances to score.

“We also had a couple of great chances to score before they got the opener.

“I was delighted with the players. They took on board what we were trying to do.

“The fine margins went against us but I can’t ask any more from the players. They were excellent.”
