We must sell our success

- Ewing Grahame

Gordon Strachan insists Scottish football chiefs need to promote our game better – because it’s in its best shape for years.

The former national boss has been impressed by Rangers’ march to the Europa League Final and Celtic’s resurgence under Ange Postecoglou.

And the national team still harbour hopes of qualifying for the World Cup later this year in Qatar through the play-offs.

But Strachan feels the ruling bodies need to do more to cash in.

He said: “Rangers and Celtic have done a great job for us in Europe to build up the coefficient.

“Plus the national team have done well qualifying for the Euros and now have a chance of reaching the World Cup finals.

“So we’re doing very well and I’m enjoying watching the football. But the way we package our game and sell it to the world isn’t how I’d like it to be done.

“There are definitely better ways of generating money for us if we did the right things.

“Would anyone want to listen to me? I think I might be too radical for that but there ARE a lot of good things going on – they just aren’t publicised properly.

“We tend to focus on the negatives but this is a wonderful business to be involved in and I love it.”

Strachan admits not everything in the garden is rosy. He said: “One thing I’m worried about is the lack of good young players coming through.

“I was at PFA Scotland’s dinner and the shortlists for the Player of the Year awards were full of the more experienced lads.

“I do look at the lower leagues and wonder where the good youngsters are.

“Maybe there’s just too many clubs, maybe that’s the problem.”
