Fishy tale by Kisner after he nets a 65

- ■ Craig Swan

Kevin Kisner put St Andrews on his hook before catching a reporter line and sinker with wind-ups about going fishing.

The American was first to serve notice of the savage scoring potential on day three.

Out in the first twoball of the day, Kisner scorched to the turn in just 30 shots as he threatened to break Branden Grace’s Major record of 62.

The 38-year-old couldn’t maintain the pace, but still carded a 65 before throwing the bait out in his postround interview.

Kisner said: “This is just a fun place to stroll around and play golf, and when the putts are going in, it makes it even more enjoyable.

“I had to birdie the last on Friday to make the cut. I was standing on the tee, it was freezing cold and I was grinding it out at 10pm. Then I was starting off at 8.45am. Quick turnaround.”

Kisner was delighted to be informed he achieved his lowest Major round of his career and smiled: “Thank you, sir. I might go fishing. Haddock are out there, I hear.”

Asked if he was serious, Kisner smiled: “No, I’m just kidding. I’ll play golf with you. Where do you want to go play?”

His luck ran out at the 351-yard 12th as he left his chip short to a wickedly placed frontpin position and it rolled back into a hollow from where he could not get up and down.

But he made amends with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 14th and picked up another shot on the 16th before carding his second bogey of the day on the Road Hole 17th.

Kisner three-putted for a disappointing par from the front edge of the 18th green. “The bogey on 12 and the par on 18 will eat at me a bit, but it was a heck of a day,” he added.
