Calvin needs to play patience at Anfield

- Fraser Mackie

Calvin Ramsay is being urged to be patient as he seeks to establish himself as a Liverpool star .

Ex-Anfield assistant Alex Miller has seen several young talents bid for glory but only some made it to the top.

The former Aberdeen right-back has hit an early hurdle after a medical flagged up an issue that has halted his pre-season preparations.

But Miller, Gerard Houllier’s chief scout then No .2 to Rafa Benitez in nine years at Liverpool, has urged Ramsay not to be feel in a rush.

He admits the £6.5million signing ■ will need time to adjust to his new environment.

Miller said: “It’s going to take him four months to feel settled. It’s very difficult for an 18-year-old who’s played 30-odd games for Aberdeen.

“He’s going to find it hard at the start. Lots of things won’t work out.

“Superstars who came through Liverpool ranks found the same. They had to work at it to get to the top.

“He’s got to face obstacles, surmount them and move on. The high standards and intensity in training can be daunting. This is a big, important step. Make or break. Calvin is going to need a bit of luck along the way.”

The former St Mirren, Hibs and Aberdeen boss likes the look of the Dons kid seen by Jurgen Klopp as a long- term rival for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He hopes Ramsay (right) adopts a similar approach to Anf ield legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. Miller said:

“The secret at Liverpool is, every day, you try and improve. I noticed that when I went there with Gerrard, Carragher and Robbie Fowler. “Calvin is going to learn so much, tactically, about the game. “Liverpool won’t put too much pressure on him, they’ll let him find his way. They love their Scots and he’ll get their full support. “By the turn of the year he might get on the bench for a game, maybe get on for 20 minutes. But I don’t think he should set time limits on anything.”
