McInnes: Go for the Kil next time

- Kenny McDonald

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes savoured the win and a place in the next round of the Premier Sports Cup but insisted theyshould’venettedmore.

An Oli Shaw double and strikes by Liam Polworth and Daniel Armstrong helped see off Stenny who got a consolation through Matt Yates’ stunner.

It was enough to see the Ayrshire men progress in second place in Group B but McInnes wants them to be more ruthless.

He said: “We would have taken four before the game and we would have won the group but for the penalty shoot- out with Partick Thistle

“We created a lot of opportunities and I am disappointed with losing a goal. The important thing was to get through.”

Killie dominated from kick off and it was no surprise when Polworth stroked a low, 10-yard shot into the bottom-left corner for the opener.

But Stenny stunned the Premiership side with a wonder free-kick from Yates more than 20 yards out in 23 minutes to level matters up.

Killie went back ahead in 33 minutes with a thumping penalty effort by Shaw down the middle despite keeper Brennan managing to get a paw on the ball.

The Ayrshire side scorned the chance for a third goal two minutes into the second half with another penalty after Euan O’Reilly was ruled to have downed Shaw. He took the kick again only to blast it against the top of the bar and over.

However, Killie did make it 3-1 in 55 minutes a s Ke r r Mc I n r oy ’ s pounding left-wing run finished with him slinging the ball over for Armstrong to run on and smash an angled shot back across the keeper.

Shaw slid home No.4 from a yard out with almost 10 minutes left to complete the rout.
