It’s.. a film about class, fame, Wags and Louboutins. It will be a winner

-

Coming to a movie theatre near you is a tale of football, money, fame, class and Christian Louboutins as Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney star in … The Wagatha Christie Chronicles.

It’s ridiculous but it’s been reported the writer behind BBC Series Poldark is working on a screenplay about one of the most spectacular libel cases of the last decade.

For any of you who need a refresher, the claim filed by Rebekah centred around a trap set by Coleen who suspected that someone from her inner circle was selling stories about her private life to the tabloid press.

After some impressive Instagram detective work, Coleen identif ied Rebekah as the culprit with the now infamous tweet stating “It’s… Rebekah Vardy’s account”, which was found to be “substantially true” by Mrs Justice Steyn in the High Court last week.ek.

After a trial that featured talll tales of mobiles conveniently falling into the North Sea, stage- managed photos at England mathches and “Secret Wags”, Vardy scored an own goal in court andd handed Rooney the victory.

All the elements of the debaclecle are a writers dream – fascinatingng main characters in Coleen as the rags-to-riches schoolgirl who became the nations sweetheart and Becky the perfect villain, desperate for fame and ruthless in her

pursuit to be Queen of the Wags. Then there’s the famous husbands, notorious Wayne and seemingly down-to-Earth Jamie, throw in loads of cash, a wickedly planned public take down and you have a blockbuster for the modern age.

Central themes could be new money, social media and the public’s insatiable appetite for gossip but I think, ultimately, the plot should be based around ego and pure oldold-fafashioned jealousy. RebRebekah’s husband is weawealthy, she can have anyanything she wants but, no mamatter how hard she tried, she could never have the levlevel of fame afforded to ColColeen. In the hierarchy of WagWags, Rooney was top of the tree, a position Rebekah coveted bubut couldn’t achieve. IdohavesomIdohavesome insight in to the crazy world of Wags as my husband played in the English Premier League, where we enjoyed six years of all the privilege that comes with playing in the best league in the world. I’ve been in the players’ lounges, private members’ clubs, personal shopping appointments, lavish weddings and over- the- top houses, it was fabulous but it’s a world that’s typically inhabited by young working- class people who have huge amounts of money come in to their lives quite suddenly.

It can be hard to cope. There’s no handbook on how to deal with new-found wealth and some end up in the spotlight which can affect them in all kind of ways.

Being top dog in the world of football wives never appealed to me, I’ve worked throughout the two decades I’ve been with my husband. But for women who don’t have careers or a life of their own, there’s perhaps value in being the wife of so and so.

In Rebekah’s case, she can have anything except the level of fame Rooney has. Coleen was papped as a teenager back in Liverpool when she started dating Wayne at age 15, she sat with Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole at the 2006 World Cup and we’ve watched her stand by her man through numerous scandals.

Yet she seems to come off dignified, likeable and down to earth. Vardy seems attention-seeking and stone-faced.

The fact is neither came out of this looking good, with the backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis, war in Ukraine and the country recovering from a pandemic, going to the High Court to pursue something so frivolous was shameful, however it will make for a great script.

My moneys on Sheridan Smith as Rooney and Michelle Keegan as Vardy.
