McInnes looks for positives

- Michael Gannon

Derek McInnes is not sorry for trying to shut up shop against Rangers at Ibrox.

But he’s convinced his new-look Kilmarnock will be better equipped to have a go as the season progresses.

The Rugby Park boss had no complaints about the defeat to Gers but felt the 2-0 score was harsh on his men who poured everything into trying to frustrate the Light Blues.

He said: “A few months ago Killie were in the Championship Ch while Gers were we in an European final. There Th has to be realism.

“We are trying to put together to a squad to cope with wi the Premiership.

“It’s going to take more than th one transfer window for fo us to get closer and maybe m be more positive.

“I don’t apologise for how ho we set up. We’re not here he to entertain.

“We were decent for long lon spells and I was delighted de with the players’ efforts, given the fact we have a lot still struggling to get up to match speed.

“No doubt Rangers deserved to win – but their second goal was a bit harsh on us.

“I have to praise my players for their work rate, togetherness, discipline and trying to stick to what they were asked to do.”

McInnes has performed a rapid rebuild and said: “We’ve made a lot of loan signings to get ready but I’m encouraged by the displays against Dundee United and Rangers.”

McInnes’ only grumble was his side’s own part in Antonio Colak’s opener.

He said: “The first port of call at Ibrox is to frustrate and not allow the game to be too open.

“We got to half-time at 0-0 and it was a mental pat on the back for us.

“We knew Rangers would come out the traps but we played ourselves into bother, so that was disappointing. For all their possession, the goal came from our mistakes.

“We lived in hope at 1-0 but Alfredo Morelos scored and it was game over.”
