Dundee has topped the t a b l e of Scotland’s worst crime blackspots.

An analysis of new Police Scotland figures shows the city has recorded the most crimes per 10,000, with Glasgow in second place.

Dundee also topped the league table in crime categories such as sexual assault, robbery, drug crime, house breaking, assaults, vandalism and shopliftin­g.

Aberdeen had the highest rate for drug dealing and Glasgow was top for drug possession.

We also discovered that many smal l rural communitie­s are being blighted by high levels of crime.

Angus, which includes Forfar and Arbroath, and Moray, which includes Elgin, were in the top five for sexual assaults.

Only Dundee, Fife and Glasgow had higher rates.

Angus was also in the top five for housebreak­ing alongside East Lothian and Midlothian.

Scotland’s smal lest county, Clackmanna­nshire, which includes the town of Alloa, was fifth highest for vandalism and robbery and had the ninth highest levels of crime overall.

Aberdeen had the highest rate of domestic v iolence fol lowed by Clackmanna­nshire and then Dundee.

North East Scotland Labour MSP Michael Ma r ra, who is f rom Dundee, said: “These are very diff icult times for communit ies across Scotland. Dundee is no different in that respect.

“These statistics reflect some of the deep- seated challenges of poverty and social unrest that blight far too many lives in our city.

“I am extraordin­arily proud of my city and our people and how they struggle to do the best for each other. The talents of local people need to be supported and unlocked.

“No one should excuse the failures of both our government­s and an economy that does not work for ordinary people. Crime and disorder are the result of those failures and things must change.” hange.”
