Gaffer’s backing Souttar

-

torrid time since making the Bosman move to Ibrox from Hearts back in the summer.

Off the pitch he suffered the tragic loss of his brother Aaron to Motor Neurone Disease in July.

And he hasn’t played for Gers since a 2-1 victory over Livingston on the first day of the Premiership season through injury.

But Scotland gaf fer Clarke insists Souttar will bounce back.

The 25-year-old has six caps already and was involved in the Nations League fixtures in June against Ireland and Armenia.

Clarke knows he has the resilience to become an important player for Rangers and Scotland in the future.

He said: “It has been a tough time for John and he’s not available for this

camp. Hopefully he’ll be back playing and doing well for Rangers soon.

“I haven’t spoken to him recently but John has really good mental strength.

“He’ll come through this and be a key player for Rangers this season.”

Clarke will be desperate for Souttar’s return to give him more options in the Scotland defence.

He will likely pair up Manchester United’s Scott McTominay with Grant Hanley of Norwich from upcoming crucial games.

The national manager reckons the players at his disposal have earned his trust despite missing out on a World Cup place.

He said: “This is a group of players who really want to do well for their country.

“They suffered when we didn’t qualify for the World Cup. Football isn’t always about good times, sometimes you have to suffer.

“With the next three games we have a chance to qualify for the top group in the Nations League.”
