Numbers don’t add up Gers

-

Apparently we’ve all been getting our sums wrong, according to the Ibrox hierarchy this week.

Rangers vice-chairman John Bennett and managing director Stewart Robertson have both given interviews over the last few days.

They’ve been trying to dampen down the flames of frustration that have been building on the back of the club’s failure to add again before the transfer window and those disastrous Celtic, Ajax and Napoli results.

Maybe some of the figures have been off but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that the club has had a profitable 12 months.

They got £12million for Nathan Patterson, another £6m for Joe Aribo and £20m for Calvin Bassey.

Robertson may now be suggesting the Champions League is only worth £20m but combine that with the run to Seville last year and it’s clear the club generated significant sums.

Even if it’s not the £100m we’ve seen quoted all over the place recently, it’s still a terrific income.

Yes, the club has some pretty high upkeep costs for the stadium and training group but, I must admit, I was surprised they couldn’t find the cash for at least one more signing having qualified for the Champions League.

Of course UEFA didn’t just hand over all that prize money the moment the final whistle blew in Eindhoven but the club knew it was coming so why couldn’t they reinvest?

The bottom line is the reason the board have been forced to come out and explain themselves is because the team hasn’t been performing and the signings made haven’t so far produced value for money.

Until that’s fixed, the board are going to continue facing difficult questions.
