FONT OF WISDOM

Ryan’s raider is belle of the ball at Newmarket

- Joe Reilly

Fonteyn Fonteynputherbest put her best foot forward in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.

Kevin Ryan’s charge was a 16/1 shot for the

Group 1 having run relatively poorly on her last few outings.

However, she showed every sign of outrunning those odds as she travelled powerfully just behind the leader Prosperous Voyage.

Jockey Neil Callan kicked for home inside the final furlong and he got an immediate response from his partner who stormed clear in the closing stages.

Rising star Laurel (9/1) came with a strong late run but she could not reach her rival who scored decisively by a length with Grande Dame (14/1) third.

Market leaders Homeless Songs and Saffron Beach were both extremely disappointing and finished well down the f ield. Cal lan said: “Fonteyn looked magni f icent in the paddock. Kevin Ryan said that if she jumps and is f ighting you, let her go and she’ll come back to you and she did that.

“We didn’t really go breakneck and I was just able to let her go down the hill at her own accord rather than having to shove her, and once she got into the dip and changed her legs, the race was as good as over.

“Any Group One, wherever you get it, is big. They are the big races throughout the season but it is even more important I won it for Kevin, we go back a long way.”

Rohaan (3/1 Fav) stormed to his fourth success at Ascot in the John Guest Bengough Stakes.

David Evans’ star was held up for most of the Group 3 contest by a confident Adam Kirby before easing to the front a furlong out.

Summerghand (20/1) tried to mount a late challenge but he was unable to bridge the gap, going down by a just over a length with Commanche Falls (15/2) back in third.

Rohann is now a 5/1 chance for the Qipco British Champions’ Sprint at Ascot in two weeks.
