Lads Well warned at corner KO

- David McCarthy

Stevie Hammell was frustrated that his Motherwell side put so much into the game and came away with nothing.

And he insisted his players should have been better prepared for the corner routine that led to Celtic’s winner from Reo Hatate – because they’d been warned about it.

Hammell said: “We are coming away disappointed. I feel a little frustrated and believe, in the latter part of the game, we could have been better.

“We had chances, but the fine details and the big moments have to be better when you come to places like this.

“The goal is the corner that they do. It was something we highlighted. They take two out and hit that space at the edge of the box. They did it quickly but it shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

“Of course, he has to score from 25 yards, which is difficult, but those big moments and the quality from their point of view is what makes the difference. Those are the fine margins. From our point of view, it was avoidable.

“Towards the end we could have been more clinical and tidier in our play and be coming away with something.”

Hammell believes Callum McGregor’s late red card was a classic case of taking one for the team.

He added: “It was a good red card from their point of view. Ross [Tierney] is in for sure and I think Joe Hart is in a bit of no-man’s land. Whenever we stretched them and pressed properly, we caused them problems.

“They are a very good team but we felt we could have hurt them more. They were hanging on and saw the game out well because they are clever.”
