The Citizens sign off with the right Font

-

Liam Fontaine notched a late leveller for Edinburgh as they failed to close the gap at the top after a thriller with Montrose.

With Dunfermline’s game off, the Citizens had the chance to move within two points of top spot in League One.

But the home side found the Gable Endies a tough nut to crack with both sides settling for a point in the end.

Montrose nearly got off to the perfect start inside the opening minute when Craig Johnston was sent through one on one with Edinburgh goalie Robbie Mutch, who did well to deny the midfielder an early goal.

That was quickly followed up by midfielder Craig Brown firing his effort from the edge of the area over.

But Edinburgh got their noses in front with seven minutes played and it came from a short corner, when John Robertson cut inside his man and fired a fierce shot past keeper Ross Sinclair.

Robertson went close to doubling his and Edinburgh’s tally with a quarter of an hour played after James Craigen had fed Innes Murray. He then squared the ball to Robertson who pulled his effort just wide.

Stewart Petrie’s side must have thought they had found an equaliser before the break when Johnston’s header looked goal-bound but was deflected on to the bar before being cleared.

Montrose did level just four minutes into the second half when Brown’s free-kick was nodded into the path of Johnston, who reacted first to prod home.

The Gable Endies looked to have completed the turnaround in 62 minutes when patient build up play led to Rory McAllister turning his marker inside the area and thumping an effort low past the keeper.

However Edinburgh’s equaliser arrived 15 minutes from time when veteran stopper Fontaine won the second ball from Craigen’s free-kick and rifled high into the net past Sinclair.
