Fraser doubles down on need for much more

- ■ David Barnes

Fraser Brown passed on taking a pat on the back after marking his return with a try double in Warriors’ bonus-point win in Wales.

The hooker, making his comeback after three weeks sidelined with a concussion, grabbed two of Glasgow’s six tries on URC duty and was man of the match.

It offered a timely reminder of what he can do ahead of Thursday’s announcement of the Scotland team to face England at Twickenham two days later.

But it wasn’t enough to put a smile on the 33-year-old’s face as he said: “It was a mixed bag, to be honest.

“When we controlled the ball and got into the Dragons’ 22, we came away with points.

“But there were too many times in the game we lost our way and let them back in.”

Asked about his firsthalf double, he added: “I can’t take too much credit because I was just on the back of the maul.”

Skipper for the day Stafford McDowall also underlined his Scotland credentials with the Six Nations looming.

The uncapped centre is more of an outside bet for the Calcutta Cup crunch but could sneak into Gregor Townsend’s matchday squad after another intelligent show.

He said: “Things are going really well at the moment and the most pleasing thing is our away form because that is something we struggled with last year.

“To come to a tough place like Rodney Parade and leave with five league points is massive.”

Warriors raced into a second-minute lead when McDowall and Sam Johnson combined to send Cole Forbes over.

Brown then doubled their account with eight minutes played before scores from Rhodri Williams and Sio Tomkinson saw the Welsh outfit tie it up.

But Franco Smith’s side recovered their composure as Brown’s second try and one for stand-off Duncan Weir secured the bonus point before the break.

McDowall claimed No.5 early in the second half and Warriors sealed victory with a 75-yard interception try from Sebastian Cancelliere with five minutes to go.

Tries from Taine Basham and Chris Coleman gave Dragons a losing bonus point.

It extends Glasgow’s unbeaten run to nine in all competitions and lifts them to fifth in the URC table with a game in hand over the Bulls, who are one point ahead in fourth spot.
