Stevie’s VAR KO swipe

- Andy Newport

Stevie Hammell blasted VAR’s failure to send ref John Beaton for a closer look at Motherwel l ’s first-half penalty shout.

The Fir Park boss saw his side rack up their ninth league game without a win as Curtis Main’s strike left the Steelmen only off the bottom on goal difference.

But Hammell insists Well should have had the chance to equalise after Charles Dunne appeared to wrestle Ricki Lamie to the ground in the box four minutes after the opener.

Hammell said: “I don’t think it was a classic – it was the type of game which suited the way St Mirren play and we played most of it the way they wanted it to be played.

“But we should also had a penalty – that’s quite clear. For them to not even ask the ref to have a look at it is really frustrating. Our analysts told me it was a strong penalty claim and I agree, especially when you’ve seen what’s already been given this season.

“We were pretty much told at meetings that the referee would be the man who’d have the final say in these decisions and anything close to contentious would be looked at.

“I haven’t questioned a referee’s decision since I’ve been here but I was looking for an explanation today and I got no information at all. It’s a worry.”

Well were without new Japanese recruit Riku Danzaki as they await clearance for paperwork.

But Hammell hopes he’ll be registered in time for Wednesday’s visit of St Johnstone to provide his side with a spark.

He said: “We’d hoped he might be involved today but that wasn’t to be. We also put a lot of work in playing with two strikers only for Mikael Mandron to pick up an injury at the end of training on Friday.”
