I’M PROUD I GOT TO PLAY WITH ICON BALE

- Scott McDermott

Dylan Levitt feels privileged to have played with Gareth Bale before the Welsh legend quit football.

And the Dundee United midfielder believes his international team-mate – and national icon – is the greatest British player EVER.

Bale announced his retirement from the game earlier this month after leading his nation at the World Cup.

Levitt was in Rob Page’s squad for Qatar and in his 13 caps so far got the chance to play with the legendary former Spurs and Real Madrid star.

The midfielder is honoured to have played alongside the 33-year-old and reckons the UK has never produced a better footballer.

Levitt said: “I was sitting at home when I found out Gareth had retired, just like everyone else.

“He’s had a massive career and has been a huge role model for myself and the nation.

“To share a pitch with him before he ended his career was amazing.

“I think he’s the greatest British player ever. For what he has done in England, abroad and for Wales as a nation – that speaks for itself.

“I might be a bit biased towards Wales but I think he is the best.”

Bale’s retirement, along with Aaron Ramsey coming towards the end of his career, should open the door for players such as Levitt to make a bigger impact on the Welsh side.

The former Manchester United playmaker, who was an unused sub at the World Cup, said: “The manager has put faith in young players from the day he got the job.

“You can see that by the squad he picked for the World Cup, which had a lot of youngsters and players my age that I’ve played with through the age groups.

“He’s put faith in us and that’s great to know that you’ve got a chance.

“I’d like to think I was close to getting minutes in Qatar.

“Everyone wanted to play in the World Cup for Wales.

“But results didn’t go how we wanted. If they’d been different then maybe I’d have got on.”
