Student collects vital aid

-

Two plane-loads of vital aid have been delivered to quake victims after a student set up a collection point in his flat.

Turkish-born Ozan Bahadir and two friends appealed for clothes and food to be delivered to his home in central Glasgow last Tuesday.

They were astonished when 120 people turned up over the next two days with nappies, provisions, tents, heating equipment, sanitary towels and warm coats.

It comes as people across Scotland have given millions of pounds in cash and supplies to help the victims in Turkey and Syria in the past week.

Within 24 hours of a UKwide appeal being launched on Thursday, £3.2million had been donated north of the Border, including a £500,000 contribution from the Scottish Government.

Ozan, 30, who studies at Glasgow University, said: “At one point, there were more than 30 people helping us.

“We have since taken more than 250 parcels through to Edinburgh Airport.

“They were then put on two planes and flown to Istanbul.

“From there, they were taken to southern Turkey and Syria.

“We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the numbers of donations and the generosity of people. We cannot thank them enough.”

Ozan is a member of the Association of Turkish Alumni and Students in Scotland, which is helping victims.

They have set up other collection points in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen in collaboration with the Turkish Consulate in Edinburgh.

Vital supplies have also been flown to Turkey from Edinburgh.

Earlier last week, four Scots firefighters flew out to help. Watch Commander John Aitchison, of Portlethen, Aberdeenshire, Crew Commander Steven Adams, of Dundee, and Tony Armstrong and Keith Gauld, of Aberdeen, have joined a 76-strong British rescue contingent.
