Angry Staggies manager Mackay is a Malcontent

- ■ Fraser Wilson

Malky Mackay gave referee Graham Grainger both barrels for denying Ross County a penalty and failing to penalise St Mirren for time-wasting.

The Staggies boss couldn’t understand why the official failed to award a spot-kick when sub Owura Edwards was barged off the ball by Saints keeper Trevor Carson on the hour. Mackay was also incensed by the home side’s slow tactics after they got their noses in front in the seventh minute.

But his main gripe was the penalty controversy and he said: “I actually can’t believe that wasn’t given.

“He [Edwards] touches it by the goalie and the goalie smashes him out of the park.

“If that was in the middle of the park it’s a foul. At no point did Carson touch the ball and Owura puts it by him on the line then he gets banged out of play. It’s a huge error.

“I spoke to the fourth official about the time wasting from the first 15 minutes. It’s about momentum because it just stops. Eventually someone has to take a yellow card. The fourth official said he was telling the ref.

“It’s glaringly obvious that Graham did nothing about it. That’s not good enough.”

County now face a six-pointer against Dundee United in Dingwall next weekend with just a point separating themselves and the rock-bottom Terrors in the Premiership table.

And Mackay said: “We have to get back on the horse. It was a bad day at the office today.

“The teams round about us lost too so it’s not ground lost. We have to make sure we look after ourselves and keep chipping away to get out the two bottom spots.”
