Power enjoys finest Our in Coral thriller

- ■ Joe Reilly

Our Power surged to victory for Sam Thomas in the Coral Trophy Handicap Chase at Kempton.

The gelding was a well-backed 11/2 chance to better last year’s excellent third in the valuable three-mile showpiece.

The eight-year-old gave his supporters few concerns as he jumped and galloped well for Sam Twiston-Davies before moving into contention two out.

Flegmatik (10/1) still held a healthy lead at the last but the winner came with a devastating late run to cut him down close home by a head.

Sam Twiston-Davies: “Our Power was fantastic early in the season and that’s the last time he ran, so well done to Sam Thomas for bringing him back after things weren’t going well.

“He’s just a very likeable horse to ride, very straightforward, he’s not the biggest but is bold. He’s in the Grand National which is the dream. We’d need a few to come out but he’s a very accurate jumper, very neat, and has pace so you can travel. He’s shown he stays well there.”

Solo (11/4) was a class apart for Paul Nicholls in the Pendil Novices’ Chase.

The seven-year-old made every yard under Harry Cobden in the Grade 2 contest, putting his rivals to the sword with a series of impressive leaps.

Datsalrightgino (11/4) tried to mount a challenge but he was always well held by the winner who bolted up by two lengths.

The Ditcheat Duo also took the Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle with Rubaud (11/4).

The five-year-old also led all the way in the Grade 2 and stayed on very strongly to fend off the determined Mullenbeg (7/1) by just over a length.
