We paid price for naivety

- ■ Scott McDermott

Derek McInnes claimed naivety cost Kilmarnock two precious points against Motherwell.

Hero keeper Sam

Walker kept the Rugby Park side ahead after

Scott Robinson’s opener in the first half.

But in the 90th minute, Well ace Callum Slattery punished McInnes’ men with a stunning free-kick equaliser.

The Kilmarnock gaffer was pleased with how his team dealt with a big game at the bottom of the table but admitted they had to be cuter towards the end of the game.

He said: “It’s always a sore one when you’re 1-0 up and we’ve been guilty of not taking opportunities to put games to bed.

“We’ve managed the game really well until the last five minutes.

“We were guilty of a bit of naivety in giving away one too many fouls in the dying embers of it.

“All that did was give Motherwell opportunities. Slattery has a lot to do but

McINNES that moment of quality has earned them their point and taken two away from us.

“But I’m happy with how we dealt with the game.

“The players set about the task really well. I take comfort from that level of performance.

“We’re going to have to deal with more games like that but when the heat comes on you in the last five minutes and you’re only one up it’s important to deal with what’s in front of you.”

McInnes was also delighted with his keeper’s impressive display.

He said: “I’ve got a keeper in really good form.

“Sam has been in a good place for a while now and was called upon a few times. It looked like we’d get a clean sheet because Sam looked very assured.

“Jon Obika and Kevin van Veen can cause teams problems but we handled them well and that took a lot away from Motherwell’s attacking threat.

“As a team we were very good and 1-0 should have been enough for us.”
