Hayes: It’s over to the Bhoys now

- ■ Alison McConnell

Celtic star Caitlin Hayes hopes her brace against Rangers on Friday night has set the stage for a double Hoops celebration this weekend.

Fran Alonso’s side beat Rangers 3- 0 as they moved top of the SWPL table, although Glasgow City can return to the summit later today after they face Aberdeen.

Psychologically, the win was huge for Celtic given Rangers had not lost a league game since May 2021.

Hayes has a golden ticket for this afternoon’s Viaplay Cup Final and has everything crossed for another celebration.

She said: “I’ve been lucky enough to get a ticket and I can’t wait. We have got the weekend off to a great start so hopefully the boys do the job on Sunday and then it is a perfect weekend for a Celtic fan.”

Hayes netted twice with Amy Gallagher scoring Celtic’s other goal.

And the Hoops ace underlined her belief that this Celtic side are genuine title contenders.

She joked: “A win is a win – and a win is even better when it’s against them lot.

“I’m just proud of us going forward. And all the people who doubt us or say it can’t be done – that we are the third horse in a two-horse race – we took care of business.

“We got it done, we got the three points and we are top of the league so we will try to stay there.

“As for looking further, we will just keep working hard, keep our heads down and keep moving forward.”

Hayes maintained that, despite Rangers’ unbeaten league title triumph last season, Celtic had no hang-ups about taking them on.

“They are obviously a great side but we were confident because we have beaten them before,” she said.

“If you consider all the wins and losses since both teams went professional, I think we have done better in that we’ve got more wins.

“So we can walk into any game with our heads held high and an element of confidence that we believe can’t be matched.”
