Boom at the top for Ross

- Alison McConnell

Leanne Ross admits she is still pinching herself at how far women’s football has come in Scotland.

Ross, named permanent manager of Glasgow City this week, was part of a generation who combined careers with game time.

The 41-year-old won 27 honours with City and was part of the generation who made the club the dominant force here.

The growing professionalism of the game is something Ross has really relished.

And she said: “It is amazing to see just how far it has come, although it still has a bit to go.

“To have full-time pro contracts within the women’s game is something we wouldn’t have been able to imagine.

“I am part of a generation who had a professional attitude and approach but to see the growth has been fantastic.”

Ross’ first task at City is to get the title back after Rangers claimed it last season.

City were left empty-handed last term as Celtic claimed both domestic cups with Ross accepting it drove an elevation in standards this season on and off the park at the club.

She said: “In my time here I won

something every single season and winning is a drug – you just want more of it.

“It was tough to come away empty-handed but it helped us as club to focus and to make a few changes that this season have stood us in good stead so far.

“The people who run this club and the time and effort they put in – they are as determined as the players and the coaching staff here to be successful. From the outside people underestimate the resources that are put into this club but we certainly know and appreciate what they put in.”

Ross’ first game as permanent gaffer comes against Glasgow Women this afternoon before the split takes place.

Glasgow Women have not claimed a single point yet in the league following their promotion with the goal difference column sitting at a staggering -98.

Ross said: “I have never been in that position but it must be very difficult. Every coach wants their team to win games.

“But in terms of the league, lots of teams still have lots to play for and there are still questions over who will take that sixth place before the split which is good.

“Come the end of the season it’s great to be up there challenging.”
