MAGIC MUSTANG IS RIDING HIGH

Ford’s all-electric SUV is powerful, stylish and full of great gadgets

the drive modes set the mood – you can choose from Whisper, active or Untamed.

All will f ling you back in your seat if you put your foot down too hurriedly but then this is the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and the clue is in the name.

The Mach-E pays homage to its cousin, the iconic Mustang of film, television and track fame, and to make the point, the pony is firmly attached to the grille – and the rear – of this big beefy all- electric SUV.

Yep, it’s a fully electric car and the first, I have to say, that I plugged into my new Pod Point home charger overnight. It worked a treat. I had loads of miles to play with the next day. And play we did.

We started off with the onepedal driving feature switched on, which allows you to operate the car simply by l i f ting and pressing the accelerator to the floor, but that was a bit boring – so off it went. Now we were talking.

The beauty, or danger, of this car is that, without thinking, you find yourself exceeding the speed limit and having to pull back, which is no bad thing because this deceleration charges the battery and gives you greater range.

The drive itself is smooth, silent and thrilling as long as you watch your speed but come up to a merge and you are always going to be a winner with that thrust behind your foot. Indeed, this car will reach 62mph in just 3.7 seconds. Phew!

That, combined with a brake horsepower of 487, and you are beginning to get an idea of the potential of this car.

It may look like an SUV but the car itself has other ideas.

It is full of confidence – big, bold and ready to take on anything.

Outside, it sits on lovely 20in alloys with deep wheel mouldings, a GT scuff plate and a clamshell bonnet with lines leading back to a coupe rear. It is svelte, it is handsome, it is mean.

At the rear are the three diagonal tail lights, just like the Mustang sports car, and when you open the doors at night there are Mustang puddle lights galloping off into the darkness. Interestingly, when you approach the car with your key fob, it not only opens the door but activates a series of numbers on the B pillar. In case you lose your keys, you can set up a combination to get you in.

Honestly, Ford has all the electronic gadgets in this car. That includes a massive 15.5in larger-than-iPad information and entertainment screen, which is very easy to use and, because of its size, very easy to read.

It is particularly useful when reversing because not only do you get the rear view but also the bird’s eye view of your trajectory at the same time.

The instrument panel behind the wheel is much sma l ler but a l so ver y accessible because of the lack of anything but essential information on it.

There are plenty of safety and driver assistance systems on this car, as you would expect, and other useful features like a funk (front trunk), a wireless charging pad and a button entry system.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is an experience in itself – indulge yourself and take a ride.
