Gunn is Clarke’s big shot
David Wagner says Angus Gunn has what it takes to become a permanent fixture for Scotland.
The Norwich City keeper made his debut for Steve Clarke’s side in the 3- 0 win over Cyprus yesterday.
And Canaries manager Wagner insists he deserves his chance to shine on the international stage.
With Craig Gordon facing a long spell on the sidelines due to injury, Gunn now has a chance to be the go- to keeper for Clarke in our Euros campaign.
Wagner said: “I know from what I’ve seen in t raining that Angus deserved this.
“He has made massive improvements – he is mature, calm, makes great saves and keeps clean sheets.
“I’m pleased for him and for us as a club, that we have another international in our squad. And Scotland have a very good keeper – a proper goalie.”
Yesterday’s debut comes after Norwich’s No. 1 – whose dad Bryan won six
Scottish caps – had a change of hear t over representing Scotland.
The English-born star had knocked back approaches from Scotland earlier in his career but has now switched his international allegiance.
German Wagner revealed he made a similar move in a bid for World Cup glory over 25 years ago.
The Schalke striker knew he wouldn’t get a chance ahead of the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann and Ol iver Bierhoff but having an Amer ican stepfather allowed him to represent the USA eight times.
Wagner said: “There are similarities. I played for the German youths but had no chance to get a call up for the German ‘A’ team.
“The difference is Angus is a much better player than I was. For him to play internationals, and maybe with a chance of a big tournament, is exciting.”
