SAME GENES

Rock dads’ new audience have been fans since birth

- John Dingwall

The View’s Kyle Falconer feared his band had turned into dad rockers when he found out some fans had been born to his hit songs.

The Dundee group – who are best known for their 2007 single Same Jeans which reached No3 in the UK chart – are to release a long awaited comeback album in July, 16 years after their hit debut single Wasted Little DJs.

But dad-of-three Kyle, 35, said they now have a new generation of fans, many of whom turned up to see them at their reunion gigs to hear new record Exorcism Of Youth.

He said: “When we did those shows, we were thinking, ‘ Who is our audience going to be?’

“We still have a bit of youth on our side because we were young when we started out but we were expecting old dads to turn up.

“A lot of young people turned up too, so I asked some of the kids how they knew our music. They told us they were born to our songs, like Wasted Little DJs, because their dads were obsessed with that song. It makes you feel old.”

Kyle formed The View when he was just 14 with bassist Kieren Webster, guitarist Pete Reilly and drummer Steven Morrison.

Kyle said they have grown up since their wild teenage years, which saw him arrested for drug possession and fined after admitting an air rage incident. He said: “That’s all in the past. Back then it was crazy times. Having children changes you for the better.” Kieren, 36, said: “We have come back able to appreciate things more.” Pete, 37, revealed that Steven, known as Mo, is not with the band at the moment. He said: “Mo has personal problems but, if he gets them sorted out, he’s more than welcome back.” The band are now managed by former Creation Records boss Alan McGee, who discovered Oasis, and will play at the main stage of TRNSMT this summer. Kyle added: “TRNSMT appeals to a younger audience so it will be good to play to a new generation.”
