Don’t jump Gunn

- Scott McDermott

Angus Gunn must have walked around Hampden a f ter beat ing Spa in wondering why he hadn’t ditched England sooner.

Scotland’s new No. 1 couldn’t have wished for a better start after cleansheet victories over Cyprus and Euro giants Spain.

But Gunn doesn’t have to look far for perspective as team- mate – and club skipper – Grant Hanley has warned him not to get too carried away just yet.

The Norwich City pair were immense in the 2- 0 defeat of the Spaniards.

But asked how Gunn must be feeling, Hanley – who has had his fair share of disappointments with the national side – said: “I told Angus it isn’t always like this with Scotland!

“He couldn’t have had a better start but we have to keep our feet on the ground.

“I’ve known him for years and knew he’d fit in fine with this group of boys straight away. He’s a quality keeper so we’re pleased to have him involved.”

Hanley believes gaffer Steve Clarke is building something special with this Scotland squad who top Group A in European Championship qualifying.

Hanley will now gear up for Norway and Georgia in June – when he could win his 50th cap.

He said: “Tuesday was right up there as one of my best nights with Scotland.

“We beat the top seeds in our group and want to be beating sides like that on a regular basis. But we are only two games in and have to keep improving.

“I was out of the squad for a few years so want to get as many caps as I can.

“I’m one of the more experienced players and try to communicate with the younger ones during the games. Ryan Porteous and Aaron Hickey have huge talent and ability.

“That’s the first time I’ve played with Porto and he was magnificent.”
