Fan rule puts us all at risk
We live in tawdry times. Pol it ical act ivism and allegations of threats and intimidation from the Green Brigade splitting the Celtic support into two factions.
P y rot e ch n i c s a nd sectarian singing from the Rangers support called out by Dundee after Wednesday night’s game there.
And investigations into racist abuse sent to the young Hibs player Allan Delferriere by one of his own club’s supporters after he had the misfortune to score an own goal against Ross County last Tuesday night.
“Abhorrent” was the word used by the club to condemn what took place.
And we still have the 11th day of the 11th month to come next weekend.
The most dreaded date in the football calendar here because we know what to expect when a minute’s si lence is requested to remember those who died in war on Armistice Day.
There was one extract that caught my eye from the Green Brigade’s official statement, condemning Celtic for suspending their season tickets.
The bit about having no regrets over bypassing security to erect a banner, unwanted by the club, before the game against Atletico Madrid at Celtic Park.
“We occasionally breach the assorted regulations which are in place to sterilise football stadiums,” the statement said.
The opposite of security is insecurity and the creation of an unsafe environment.
It’s not about sterility, it’s about safety and everyone’s right to go to the match without fearing for their safety.
If you don’t know, or don’t accept , the di f ference between right and wrong then we’re in trouble – and who knows what happens next?
