One for the money, two for the show.. my twins’ shot at TV stardom (sort of)
I THINK the greatest sequel in the history of film is Trainspotting follow-up T2.
Despite being the work of Danny Boyle I was immediately nervous when I heard it was in the works, given how much it had to live up.
It was just perfect – with every big character from the original back in a starring role and there was an even funnier undercurrent to the whole tragedy than the first film.
The anniversary of its release recently meant that I came across a picture of director Danny with Devon and Lauren Lamb, the identical twins who played the poor baby back then in 1995.
Did you know that almost every single child of this age on screen is a role shared by twins?
Whether it’s Ross and Rachel’s little girl Emma in Friends, the wee boy in small film Big Daddy or Fizz and Tyrone’s baby Hope (several sets of twins have played her over the years) they have all been played by more than one person
Ever since my twin girls were born I was told by several friends in the media to get them into showbiz.
The promise of a nice little cheque came our way over a decade ago.
And while I won’t pretend this was a factor, I was keener on the idea that I could one day present my girls Hollie and Rachel
with a DVD boxset of the big new TV comedy they were cast in.
It was called Badults, a new BBC Three commission and was widely tipped to be the next Inbetweeners. It truly wasn’t but still our girls got their moment on prime time television.
If there’s one thing you need to know about TV it’s that everything takes 16 hours longer than radio – the
medium has never appealed to me

and in any case I have a complete inability to smile and speak at the same time.
So we arrive at a high school in Glasgow for the show where my beautiful little girls have been cast as a boy. And we spent what felt like a week hanging around in the gymnasium before being taken onto a playing field where they would sit in a baby walker appearing to be screamed at by an over-zealous fitness coach.
I say “appearing” because it was filmed in such a way that the lovely actor they were working with would never actually be making anything other than small baby-talk with them while out there. Which meant another 60 camera shots.
There is only episode of Badults on Youtube but I have just ordered the boxset and I’ll look forward to explaining what a DVD is when I hand them this present in a decade when they reach 21.
