IT’S TIME WE HANDED OUT THE LESSONS

- BY GRAEME MacPHERSON

JACK DEMPSEY reckons Scotland need to start delivering big wins before it’s too late.

Gregor Townsend’s side endured another disappointing Six Nations campaign that failed to hit the highs hoped for.

Wins over Wales and England offered promise only for the Scots to fail against France, Italy and Ireland.

Dempsey insists talk of the team being mentally weak is harsh – but the Glasgow star admits it’s time Scotland stopped learning and proved that they have learned.

He said: “A lot of the stuff that has come out in the last few weeks has been painted with a broad brush, which I don’t normally agree with.

“Every week it’s a different story, a different narrative. Every game is very different.

“The Rome game was a very different story to what happened in I r e land , to wha t happened against France.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re taking the lessons we learn on the Monday and the Tuesday in the review, and making sure it doesn’t happen again. In terms of the mentality, I see what the boys do week in, week out at training.

“The boys want to win. They work really hard. I think we work harder than anyone else.

“It’s just about making it happen. It’s time to deliver.

“There’s no point talking about lessons if you’re just sitting there learning the whole time. What do you have to show for it?”

Dempsey showed he has the right mentality with a man of the match display to help Glasgow come from behind to beat Cardiff on Friday night.

The giant No.8 insists there was no way he was going to lose three games in a row.

He added: “I’m always hesitant to say too much on the field.

“It was more a case of, ‘we’ve lost to Italy, lost to Ireland, I’m not losing again’, especially going into a week off.

“I was just trying to rev the boys up and keep them positive, doing my role, and it could be a big win come the end of the season.”
