SEAN MY WAY TO TAKING ON WORLD’S BEST

- BOXING BY MICHAEL GANNON

SEAN LAZZERINI has set his sights on the best fighters on the planet after finally getting the green light to kick-start his pro career.

The 26- year- old was brilliant in Birmingham as he took Commonwealth Games gold in 2022 but had to wait a year for his professional licence due to medical issues.

Lazzerini is now set to star on the undercard of Willie Limond’s clash with Joe Laws at the Emirates Arena on May 3. And the hard-hitting light-heavyweight insists he’s out to make up for lost time.

Lazzerini said: “It’s sorted now thankfully. I just need to build up my profile again and get myself out there. I like doing it the hard way.

“In some ways I’m happy as I have the hunger back to really work hard and claw my way to the top.

“It was hard but I was training constantly and sparring with some of the best fighters in the world, like Callum Smith, Anthony Yarde, two of the best light heavyweights in the world, who have fought at the highest level.

“You have to make the best out of a bad situation.

“I don’t know timescales but my management will know when I am ready. I feel I am ready this year to compete for titles.

“I’ve sparred with all of these people and I know I’m better than them. But boxing is all about timing and that has to be right. I’m chomping at the bit because I want these big names and big titles.”

Lazzerini is out to follow in the footsteps of Scottish Commonwealth heroes such as Josh Taylor – who went on to become a global superstar.

He said: “Can Josh be an inspiration? One hundred per cent. It’s good seeing Scottish boxers

achieve great things and give us something to work towards. Equally I’m making my own story. I don’t try to emulate anyone.

“Canelo Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev are the guys I really admire but you have to bring it all together to make your own style.

“You can’t help but learn from the best. I’m trying to arrange sparring with Beterbiev. I’m hungry to get all these experiences and learn. I genuinely want big names on my record.

“I’m not here to fight journeymen like some boxers. You have to work your way up but I want to be fast tracked.

“I’m working hard and know what is required. I feel when I’ve been sparring with these guys that I’m at their level. It’s about experience and that’s what I need to get.

“The Emirates show will be part of that. It will be a great experience under the lights with a big crowd. You can’t prepare for these things in the gym. I love it and want to get back out there, feel that adrenalin

rush.”
