TERRORS AT A LOUIS END

Moult wonder goal gets Goodwin’s leaders out of jail

JIM GOODWIN labelled Louis Moult’s equaliser “world class” but was left lamenting table-topping Dundee United’s defensive display again.

Wallace Duffy gave Inverness the lead at Tannadice, after poor defending from Liam Grimshaw, but it took Moult’s wonder strike from almost the halfway line to rescue a point.

It means United go into next week’s clash with title rivals Raith Rovers a point ahead, although the Kirkcaldy men now have a game in hand.

Boss Goodwin said: “It’s a game we should have won and that we expect to win.

“But we don’t half make life difficult for ourselves sometimes, with the goals we’ve conceded in the last eight or nine games.

“Only on a couple of occasions in the last 10 or 11 games have we managed to get ourselves that first goal and on both of those occasions we’ve gone on to win comfortably. But inconsistencies are killing us.

“I always fancied that we would score, albeit not a worldclass goal like the one Moult managed to pull out the hat. It shows how important he is to us.”

United were left looking for a reaction after their Dunfermline drubbing, while Inverness needed something after losing at Ayr.

It proved to be unlucky 13 for the home side and Grimshaw, in terms of minutes.

He tried to nick the ball in front of Aribim Pepple but the Caley attacker got in behind him. His low cross was palmed out by Jack Walton but the ball fell to the unmarked Duffy who fired in.

Both sides lost players to injury. Kevin Holt – who hurt a knee – was replaced by Ross Graham and Nathan Shaw made way for Samson Lawal.

Goodwin said: “It doesn’t look great with Kev, we’ll have to wait on the scan results.”

Tony Watt should really have equalised when he was put through after a poor kick-out from Mark Ridgers but the keeper got down to redeem himself and hold the low shot.

Goodwin sent on Moult for Grimshaw at the interval and it proved to be a smart move as United levelled out of nowhere.

A loose ball bounced just inside the Inverness half and

Moult let fly. He had seen Ridgers off his line and beat him with a shot that bounced up and just under the bar.

Inverness thought they should have had a foul in the build-up and boss Duncan Ferguson claimed: “It was a free-kick on Cammy Kerr.

“Our guy is on the ball, he nudges him down. It was a freekick. We didn’t get the decision and you wouldn’t have seen that great goal, would you?”

Declan Gallagher cracked a shot off a post and Graham had an effort blocked. Ridgers then made a point-blank stop to keep out a Ross Docherty header and Watt fired wide.

Inverness could have won it with a shot from James Carragher but Docherty blocked.

Ferguson added: “I am delighted. Nobody gave us a chance. We are the team at the bottom of the league. Got our noses in front, managed the game well. We had to soak up pressure but had chances to win it.”
