I’m more than just a destroyer

- BY SCOTT McDERMOTT

HE has become a cult figure in Scottish football. A defensive destroyer or a dog in midfield for Hamilton Accies, Hibs and St Mirren.

Alex Gogic doesn’t mind being renowned for his aggressive nature and never-say-die attitude.

But the Cypriot is adamant there’s more to his game than just graft.

Gogic has 18 caps for his national team and played a key role in getting the Buddies into the Premiership’s top six for two seasons on the trot.

Gogic loves life in Paisley and hopes that after seven years in Scotland he has shown what he’s capable of.

He said: “When I first made my name at Hamilton, we were always fighting to stay in the Premiership, that was our main aim.

“From there, people associated me with playing for a smaller team which was defending and didn’t have a lot of the ball.

“First impressions count and that’s probably what happened to me. People judged me from there.

“Any gaffer I’ve had will tell you that – even on the training pitch – I give 100 per cent every day.

“I take that attitude into the game for any team I play for. If you do that, you have nothing to look back on with regret.

“At Hamilton people had an impression of me as someone who just played long balls.

“But at Hibs we finished third in the league and got to two cup finals so I think I showed my value.”

St Mirren secured a top-six spot with a week to spare but want to go a step further and play Europa or Conference League football next term.

Gogic said: “It would be incredible to play in Europe for St Mirren. I tell the boys every day, it’s a massive thing. Not just for the club, it’s for the fans and the city. It’s my main goal now.”
