A giant leap but mind the gap

Dunc tells his troops they aren’t safe yet after huge win

- MICHAEL BAILLIE AT HAMPDEN

DUNCAN FERGUSON saw Inverness pick up a massive win in their bid to avoid a relegation play-off – but warned his players they are not safe yet.

Cammy Harper’s sensational first-half free-kick proved to be the difference as it sent Caley leapfrogging above Queen’s Park, who find themselves in the dreaded relegation play-off spot with just three games remaining.

But Big Dunc told his players they can’t ease up yet as they need more points.

He said: “To come away and pick up three points was the main thing, although we played really well as well.

“We were worthy winners and it was a great goal from Cammy. It’s massive. We’re two points ahead of Queen’s Park but we can’t sit on that because it’s only two points.”

Harper got the only goal of the game after 25 minutes with a stunning free-kick.

Mackenzie Carse was penalised for handball as he blocked a shot.

From 25 yards out, Harper delivered an unstoppable leftfoot shot which arrowed into the top corner and gave keeper Calum Ferrie no chance.

Inverness had a chance to double their advantage when Billy Mckay latched onto a flick from Alex Samuel but he fired over the crossbar.

The Spiders had been second best in the first half but just before the interval star striker Ruari Paton tried to spark them into life.

He tried his luck with a shot from distance but it went over.

They stepped up a gear after the interval as they pushed for an equaliser and finally tested Mark Ridgers in the Inverness goal when Cillian Sheridan shot from the edge of the box.

Then Ridgers pulled off an impressive stop to deny Jack Turner.

Mckay had a chance to double Inverness’ lead as he raced through on goal but Ferrie made a great save.

In added time, Paton had a chance to draw the home side level but from a few yards out he stabbed his shot straight at Ridgers.

Queen’s boss Callum Davidson hasn’t given up on climbing away from ninth spot and called on his side to show the same desire.

He said: “It was a really disappointing game all round.

“In the first half I was disappointed with our energy levels, second half we had a couple of chances.

“I believe we can win the three games, we can’t lose our belief.

“I’ve said to the players that it’s all about attitude and desire now and we need to make sure that whatever 11 I pick have that to try and finish in eighth place.”
