Chief urges the SPFL to hit Dee with rulebook
PRESSURE is growing on the SPFL to punish Dundee for the fixture chaos caused by their dreadful pitch.
One furious Premiership chief executive, speaking anonymously, told MailSport that the authority’s lack of action has turned the top tier into a laughing stock.
League matches at Dens Park against Ross County, Aberdeen, St Johnstone and Rangers (twice) have already been postponed this winter.
The CEO has demanded that the SPFL to enforce their own rules in regard to the state of Dundee’s pitch.
He has also called on them to hit the Dark Blues in the pocket for strengthening their squad while ignoring the sub-standard playing surface.
That echoed comments by Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell last weekend that Dundee had outbid them for players instead of fixing their drainage problems.
The CEO said: “The SPFL is a governing body – it’s high time they started governing.
“There are rules for pitch protection so why not use them in cases like this?
“All clubs spend money on their pitch every year but some clearly don’t spend enough and the league needs to regulate that.
“Back in 2010 the SPL fined Motherwell £50,000 after they had four games called off.
“Dundee have now had five postponements so it will be interesting to discover what action the SPFL board will take at Dundee’s hearing at Hampden on Tuesday.”
The CEO also couldn’t believe it when Motherwell – whose game at Dens went ahead after two inspections last weekend – and Rangers were asked by the SPFL whether they would agree to play the game elsewhere.
He said: “How is that a good advert for our game? They’re turning us into a laughing stock. Every club should ensure – except in extreme circumstances – their pitch is playable. If it isn’t, there should be consequences.”
