It’s Luton frown as Bees sting them bad
LUTON TOWN’S survival hopes suffered a massive blow as Brentford battered them 5-1 at home.
The Hatters were looking to put pressure on Everton and Nottingham Forest ahead of their drop rivals facing off today.
But they were blown away by the Bees with Yoane Wissa’s double and strikes from Ethan Pinnock, Keane Lewis-Potter and Kevin Schade effectively securing safety for Thomas Frank’s side.
Luton remain third bottom, a point behind Forest and two adrift of Everton, with a late Luke Berry strike providing little in the way of consolation.
Midfielder Jordan Clark said: “It’s a tough loss to take. We built this game up so big all week but we were second-best.
“Fu l l credi t to Brentford, we weren’t good enough as a team. I want to say sorry to the fans who were amazing.”
Brentford hero Wissa said: “We controlled the game from the first minute to the end. We had to win, we know how tight it is to stay in this league.”
Burnley are now just two points behind Luton after they romped to a 4-1 win that sent Sheffield United closer to the drop.
Jacob Bruun Larsen, Lorenz Assignon, Lyle Foster and Johann Berg Gudmundsson grabbed the goals that left the Blades 10 points adrift of safety.
But boss Chris Wilder refused to throw in the towel, saying: “The way I have been brought up, I like to think the players have those qualities and will go to the end.
“We have an obligation to the supporters and the division. I don’t think there was a lack of fight.”
Burnley boss Vincent Kompany praised keeper Arijanet Muric, who was outstanding after dropping clangers in recent weeks.
Kompany said: “We have to back the talent we have. Today it was a matchwinning performance.”
