We have to do a Killie to secure a Euro slot

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

STEPHEN ROBINSON admits Kilmarnock can be an inspiration after coming up short of the Rugby Park side in the race for fourth.

Saints now haven’t beaten Killie in eight games going back to 2021.

McInnes admitted the Buddies were the benchmark for his side this season but Robbo reckons his men have to emulate Killie as they look to seal their Euro spot in midweek.

He said: “Kilmarnock maybe looked at us as a template – well maybe we now need to look at them as a template for us.

“That’s the reason they’re that many points ahead of us, they’ve beaten us three times.

“There was nothing in the game but I have to give credit to Derek’s side and the players they’ve brought in. They’re a really good side, first and foremost with a real know-how.

“I mean that in the best possible way – they know how to win matches and defend when they need to defend. Plus they have

quality on the ball. We have to start winning games when we’re not 100 per cent at our best which we weren’t today.”

Saints could nail down fifth without kicking a ball if Dundee fail to get a result against Rangers on Tuesday. But Robbo said: “We want to do it ourselves.

“We’ve had two or three opportunities here in front of sold-out crowds and haven’t quite got the results. A draw today might have been arguably the right result but it was Kilmarnock who put the ball in the net.

“We want to seal Europe for ourselves. We don’t want to rely on any other result. We want to finish well and concentrate on giving the boys who are going to be here next year a real opportunity to shine and impress.”
