Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan described news of the death as tragic and offered his sympathies to the victim’s family. He said: “The fire and rescue service attended the blaze but sadly on this occasion the man’s life couldn’t be saved.
“I wish to pay tribute to the emergency services for their professionalism and their efforts.
“It’s too early in this stage of the investigation to speculate on the cause of this tragedy”.
Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council Lord Mayor Garath Keating, was at the scene and said it was one of utter devastation. He added: “I believe there were gallant attempts by people to rescue the deceased.
“Utter devastation is the only way I can describe the scene. I offer the sincerest sympathies of all to the family of the deceased.
“This is a tight-knit community and we will do all we can to support those affected.” THREE men have been arrested after a high-speed police chase.
The men, aged 23, 39 and 55, were detained when the BMW car they were in was stopped by police in the King Street area of Magherafelt, Co Derry, on Friday.
A PSNI spokesman said two men jumped from the car and sped off on foot.
But the suspects were stopped by officers.
Detective Sergeant Keith Wilson said: “Both were arrested on suspicion of burglary. All three are currently assisting police with their inquiries.”
