Woman badly15 hurt in attack
Several men reported to be involved
A WOMAN has been hospitalised with head and facial injuries after a serious attack in the early hours of yesterday.
PSNI were called to a report of a disturbance shortly before 5.25am in the Carnhill area of Derry.
The victim, in her 20s, was reportedly assaulted by a number of males in the area.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who witnessed the incident to contact detectives in Strand Road.
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA and Ballyarnett Councillor Brian Tierney have condemned the attack.
Mr Eastwood said: “This is shocking news. I completely condemn those who carried out such a horrific attack on this young woman.
“People in this city should be able to walk freely in our streets without fear of these sort of crimes.
“Anyone with any information should go immediately to the police. Those responsible must be brought to justice.
“My thoughts and prayers are with this young woman, on behalf of the SDLP I wish her a speedy recovery.”
SDLP councillor for the Ballyarnett area, Brian Tierney, added: “I am utterly sickened that such a despicable act could take place in our community.
“The people of Carnhill will be united in condemnation of this attack.
“Those responsible must be caught. I’ll continue to work with the police to find out exactly what happened and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I urge anyone with any information at all to bring it forward.”
A PSNI spokesman called for witnesses to come forward.
They added: “Or, alternatively if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
