Adams: Jail didn’t tackle alcoholism
EX-FOOTBALL star Tony Adams says prison failed to educate him about his alcoholism after he was jailed for drink-driving.
The former Arsenal and England captain also felt like he was “in a hotel” during his 57 days locked up in 1990.
“Prison didn’t teach me anything,” Adams, now 51, told a magazine yesterday. “There was no education about why I was in there or around my illness.
“I felt very secure and safe. At the time I wasn’t conscious of it but it was just like being in a hotel.
“I’d been in a hotel all my Arsenal career. You check in, play next day, check out. I had no responsibilities.”
His book – Sober: Football. My Story, My Life – is out now, price £20.
