TIMETravel
Long-haul travel from the UK changes for ever on March 25 next year – we will be able to fly to Australia non-stop. It’s made possible by the 8,947-mile range of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Aussie flag carrier Qantas will fly the 17-hour marathon from Heathrow to Perth in Western Australia, a city fast emerging as one of the country’s best destinations, with galleries, museums, great restaurants, bars, beaches, watersports and wineries – and a benign climate.
Sydney and Melbourne are 20 flying hours away so not yet feasible non-stop, but I’d bet on it taking off within five years. NIGEL THOMPSON
