UK diesel fuel duty ‘highest in all Europe’
PHILIP Hammond faces a new row over rip-off pump prices as figures reveal UK drivers pay the highest diesel fuel duty in Europe.
With VAT at 20 per cent included, only Swedes, Belgians and Italians fork out more for diesel, said the RAC. Its findings come as the cost of filling up in the UK hits a four-year high.
Duty for both petrol and diesel has been frozen at 57.95p a litre since 2011.
But as oil prices surge, petrol has risen to average £1.30 and diesel £1.34.
Campaigners fear more hikes after the Chancellor hinted his autumn Budget may lift the duty freeze to help fund an NHS boost.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “It’s not a time for him to consider ending the freeze.”
