Travel chaos as new strike stops trains

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - News - BY STEPHEN HAYWARD

RAIL passengers suffered travel misery yesterday as strike action cancelled hundreds of trains.

South Western Railway and Arriva Rail North staff staged a fresh 24-hour walkout in the ongoing row over guards on trains.

Rail, Maritime and Transport union boss Mick Cash said it was “scandalous” the two firms were “dragging their heels” over guards on trains.

The RMT said its members picketed outside stations and were solidly supporting the action.

Mr Cash said: “It’s time for both these companies to get out of the bunker and start talking seriously and positively with the union on the issue.”

ARN and the union have agreed to conciliation talks next week at Acas.
