Shipwrecked sailor ‘killed wife for cash’

Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - Saira Khan - BY STEPHEN HAYWARD

A SAILOR murdered his wife and deliberately sank their catamaran to inherit her estate, a judge heard.

Lewis Bennett, of Poole, Dorset, was accused of smuggling rare stolen coins when he was rescued alone off Cuba.

He claimed Isabella Hellmann, his wife and the mother of his child, had disappeared overboard.

A Florida judge was asked to admit evidence from relatives that the newlyweds had rowed about their dire finances.

Prosecutor Benjamin Greenberg wrote: “Hellmann’s murder would remove the marital strife from the defendant’s life and enable him to inherit money from her estate.”

Bennett, 41, faces trail for murder. Ms Hellmann, 41, has not been found.
