SIMON YATES is set to complete a British grand slam of Grand Tours today after extending his lead in the Vuelta a Espana.
Yates will join Chris Froome (Giro d’Italia) and Geraint Thomas (Tour de France) in winning the sport’s biggest races in 2018 with today’s processional final stage into Madrid. Never before has one country held all three Grand Tours with three different riders.
The Bury star made his decisive move with 11 miles remaining in yesterday’s penultimate stage, breaking nearest challenger Alejandro Valverde who dropped from second to fifth in the overall standings.
Yates eventually settled for third place in the stage, 23secs behind Spain’s Enric Mas (QuickStep) who pipped Astana’s Miguel Angel Lopez.
