Sunday Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - News - BY DAVID BURKE

WEATHER warnings were in place for today with heavy downpours of rain set to cause flooding.

A yellow alert was in force for South Wales with up to 50mm of rain expected in 24 hours in some parts.

There were also warnings that 20mm could fall in two hours at the downpour’s height.

The Met Office’s Sophie Yeomans said yesterday: “We’ve had the odd rumble of thunder, there’s been a lot of rainfall and may be flooding in patches.”

This was “likely” because of rainfall on already saturated ground.

Rain was also due to hit the West and North East of England throughout today.

Ms Yeomans added: “If you catch a shower it may be pretty severe.”
