GIN fans are snapping up advent calendars that give a shot a day and cost up to £120.

The boom in sales of the spirit has come amid growing popularity of adult advent calendars.

Last year, 16 million bottles of the spirit were sold in the 12 weeks to the end of December – up three and a half million on the same period in 2016.

This year, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose have gin advent calendars at between £50 and £60.

John Lewis has the priciest at £120, followed by Ocado at £99. And budget chain Aldi has one out at £34.99, saying demand for this festive season is up 60%.

Miles Beale, of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, said: “We have seen a surge in popularity in alcohol advent calendars in recent years.

“The gin craze helped to kick things off and this year we are seeing a huge increase in the types of alcoholic drinks used.”

A record 47 million bottles of gin were bought in 2017, up seven million on 2016.
